From the Molly Green Magazine newsletter:
I was in my early twenties, clueless, with a crying baby girl, a husband who worked out of town, and a small white-brick and blue-trim home to care for. I had formerly managed five classes of seventh graders while teaching in a public school, with ease, but now I was completely lost and overwhelmed in the world of domestic affairs. One question loomed: "What am I doing wrong?" The answer to that question I both applied to my life and shared in my book, Total Home Makeover: A 20 Day Plan to Renew Your Space & Spirit. Welcome to the mini version! In this home management course (one article per month in Molly Green's "Keeping HOME"), you will apply a clear and simple plan that brings order to your home and life. Before you begin, I have one request. Forget the chaos, and focus on the one step I put in front of you. Okay? Let's start with step 1, a daily routine. Let's Chat ... About Daily Routines! Did you know that you're a home manager? Just as a business manager is the leader of a business, so a home manager is the leader of a home. And great leaders always lead by example. That means you first pick-up your belongings such as dishes, books, crafting, and clothes, before expecting your children to pick up theirs. Proactive versus Reactive A great home manager is also proactive. Proactive is taking action prior to a need. When it comes to home management, most people are in reactive mode. They are constantly reacting to the mess (their own messes) and trying to catch up ... Reactive mode can be stressful. Then there are those few home managers who always seem to have their homes in order. The clutter is managed, the dishes are done, and the clothes are clean. These people are proactive. They seem to be on top of the mess before it even happens. The secret to becoming a proactive home manager is establishing routines. Daily Tasks There are certain tasks that need to be done each day to keep our homes and lives running smoothly. I've found that when I put them into a simple routine, it's like putting my home on auto-pilot. To create my daily routine, I first identified the little, daily home tasks that need to be completed. I jotted these down. Things like ... Make my bed Cook meals Wash dishes Do laundry Tidy up But, then, because I like balance, I added in daily personal tasks too ... Quiet time Exercise Get gorgeous Next, I placed these tasks into a daily routine that saves time and steps. I am sharing my morning routine with you today. This is the first and most powerful hour of my day. In fact, I call it my "Power Hour." Daily Routine 7:00 a.m. Get up and make the bed. 7:05 a.m. Quiet time with coffee. 7:15 a.m. My total mini work-out. 7:30 a.m. Get gorgeous and leave bathroom clean. 7:45 a.m. Take dirty clothes to laundry room and start a load. 7:50 a.m. Think dinner and breakfast. Thaw a meat or start crock pot. Feed family and pets. Bless my family with scripture, prayer, or a word of encouragement. 8:00 am Check my Create My Life Planner and start school, work, or daily to-do list. Get Moving
