A Cozy Little Corner for Mom

"Mom, don't you ever find a cozy little corner just to read?" said my daughter, looking up from her book. The baby was down for her nap and I was busy catching up with homekeeping. A cozy little corner.  That's just what I need.

Since then, I started, what I call, Mom Time.  I choose three books per term (12 weeks) to enjoy in my cozy little corner. Karen Andreola, in her book, Mother Curlture, encourages us ...

to take time to pour in, so we have something to pour out.  After all, we moms, give a lot.  What books do I choose for Mom Time?

Choosing Books

I simply choose 3 books:

1. a book of scripture
2. a Fiction
3. a Non-fiction

With our 3 lessons per day in homeschool, you can also read a lot of living books with your children. My program of study is structured a lot like Simply Charlotte Mason's, but I use free living books and more of a classical method.

I do love and utilize the Charlotte Mason method as well, often called  Classical Mason (it's all education to me). One thing I love about the Charlotte Mason method is the promotion of the arts and humanities, often called "Enrichments."

​With Enrichments, we can enjoy our days at home.

Enjoying Days at Home

There are many ways to fill our days with beauty . . .

• Nature Study - Go for a walk and draw something of interest or delight from God's nature in a nature noteboook. Go home and look it up in Comstock's Handbook of Nature Study.​ 
• Picture Study - Look at beautiful art (try Claude Monet).

• Poetry Study - Read a poem aloud during tea time or otherwise.  Try Emily Dickenson's peoms or Stevenson's, A Child's Garden of Verse.
• Art Study - Draw in the back yard or copy a picture of a famous painting to learn from their gifts.
• French Study - Why not spend just 10 minutes a day on French?

In another book I have enjoyed, A Charlotte Mason Companion, Karen writes, "Be sure that your children each day have:

• something or someone to love,
  
• something to do,
  
• something to think about" (p. 22).

• Music Study - listen to classical music for 15 min. - classicsforkids.com.
• Bible Time - have evening devotions (vespers).
• Handicraft - sew a vintage outfit or try a sampler.
• Cooking - let children learn to Master the Art of French Cooking with you or just bake cookies!
• Dance - try a classical ballet lesson at home (this is part of our Enrichment Program!

So, now you have 10 ideas to add beauty to your day at home, along with a cozy little corner!  So, say NO to harmful video games, and  say YES to Enrichments that feed the mind and soul, and you will find the joy of the simple things.  Have you ever listened to, "Tis' a Gift to Be Simple"?
